Buen provecho.
This past week has been an experience. From arriving to Guate to leaving for Honduras to traveling back to Gaute and drive the mountains to Quiche, Chichicastenango, Secuelpa, and Lake Atitlan. I left the hills of Tennesse to live under the shadow of three mighty volacanoes. It is as if the creator of both wanted me to see what He has made. How majestic these volcanoes are. I can understand now why so many indigenous people would revere them as gods. They have a power to them. They seem to sit with great might and power with confidence as the towns live under their grace. It has been hard to really understand the people here as I have not really been living in their culture this past week. I am ready to do that though.
It is amazing though the power of language. When you do not know the language of the people, really you are powerless. It makes me very sympathetic of those who come to America with no knowledge of our language and searching for a better life. How we have the thought that we are greater than they. I challenge you, though, to leave your native country to a land you barely know and see how powerful you feel. How everyone around you can communicate but you cannot. It makes you feel very small. That is the power of language. If you know it, there are great possibilities, but if not, then you are powerless.
God is doing great things here. It is amazing to see the amount of men that we have that want to study the Word of God for themselves. To see that they want to bring it back to their people. To see that they can understand what the Word says. Its very encouraging.
We as Christians need to unite, especially in these hard economic times. I understand that it will only get worse before it gets better though. That is if it gets better. We need to see that we need to set aside our pride and understand that on the truth of the Word will hold us together. It is needed to be understood that even though we are going through times where we dont have "plenty" we will have what we need. It is a promise. It is a promise from God in Luke 12. We need to see that we have been living lives of luxury and we are scared when that goes away. We, though, have been spoiled and we think that we need this or we need that. I sat in a house yesterday where the couch that the family had was a back car seat. The food we ate was a chicken that the wife killed and it was placed in the soup we had that was made with noodles, while the side dish was tortillas. The beverage we had was orange juice. It was sustenance and it was probably the best stuff that they had. It was a blessing.
